What are local effects of a benign tumour?
Pressure, Obstruction
What are local effects of a malignant tumour?
Pressure, obstruction, pain, bleeding, tissue destruction .
What are the three systematic effects of cancer?
1) Secretion of hormones
2) Weight loss
3) Paraneoplastic syndrome
What is another word for weight loss?
Cachexia.
What is dysplasia?
A pre-malignant change.
What are the signs of dysplasia?
Increased organ size, increased nuclear size, mitotic activity etc, abnormal mitosis etc.
What is intraepithelial neoplasia
Cervical dysplasia - can screen for this to detect cancer.
What is ‘normal ‘ hormone production by tumours.
If it is a tumour of a organ that already produces hormones, for example, an endocrine organ.
What is paraneoplasmic syndrome?
Symptoms and signs caused by cancer, but cannot be explained by the presence of local cancer cells.
