Chronic Inflammation 2 Flashcards
Does cleanliness promote or impair wound healing?
Promote.
Does a gaping hole promote or impair wound healing?
Impairs.
What does apposition of edges mean, and does it promote or impair wound healing?
It means the edges of the wound made close together (perhaps by stitches ) promotes wound healing.
What are coagulation mechanisms?
Clotting mechanisms.
What is a haemotoma, and does it promote or impair healing?
A solid swelling of clotted blood within tissues - impairs healing.
Does good nutrition and metabolic stability promote or impair healing?
Promote.
Impaired healing can be caused by lacking which vitamins?
A & C
What condition can impair healing?
Diabetes
Which drugs for arthritis can impair healing?
Corticosteroid drugs.
What is angiogenesis? Why is it important?
Creation of new blood vessels. enzyme secretion aids process. It enables blood supply to enter damaged tissue.
What are the characteristics of granulomatous inflammation ?
Granuloma in tissues and organs.
Why do granulomas form?
Granulomas form when the immune system attempts to wall off substances it perceives as foreign but is unable to eliminate.
What are granulomas?
Collection of macrophages. May contain giant cells. Surrounded by dead tissue and lymphocytes. Contains neutrophils and eosinophils.
What are giant cells?
Cells which are fused macrophages.
Name some causes of Granulomatous inflammation.
Foreign body, silicone associated, laghans type (TB), Warthog-Finkeldy type (seen is measles rarely)
Laghans type has a large easinophillic cytoplasm. What does this mean?
Can be readily stayed by eosin. A type of staining used in histology.
Foreign bodies are said to be associated with pyogenic granulation tissue. What does this mean?
Production of pus in granulation tissue.
Name 3 Infectious granulomatous diseases?
TB, Leprosy and syphillis.
Name 3 non - infective granulomas .
Rethumatoid disease
Sarcoidosis
Crohn’s disease.
Surgical wound healing - what is primary intention?
Minimal gap - small about of granulation tissue - small linear scar.
wound held together by stitches.
What is healing by secondary intention?
Large wound, lots of granulation tissue growth, lots of scarring.
Dressing applied regularly , heals gradually from inside.
Fracture healing occurs similarly to any type of wound healing. There is a trauma, then things such as acute inflammation, organisation, macrophages removing debris etc. (Granulation tissue contains osteoblasts and well as fibroblasts). But what is callous formation?
Osteoblasts lay down woven bone.
Bone remodelling - osteoclasts remove dead bone etc.
