Introduction to Fungi. Flashcards
Name the three types of fungi in the fungi kingdom.
Basidiomycetes. Zygomycetes and Ascomycetes.
Fungi are known as chemo-organotrophic. What does this mean?
They oxidise chemical bonds for energy.
What do fungi form?
Spores.
What do fungi lack?
Chlorophyll.
What does the fungi cell wall contain?
Polysaccharides - mainly chitin and glucan and absorbed nutrients.
What type of sterol is the main sterol found in fungi?
ergosterol.
What type of fungus is candida?
Its systematic , and found is the ascomycetes kingdom.
What is yeast?
A fungus that favours unicellular habitats, reproduces due to budding.
What are the spores of a basidiomycete called and where are they found?
They are called basediospores and are found at the top of the fungi.
What is the spore bearing projection found on the basidiomycete called?
Sterigmata.
Give an example of a basidiomycete fungus.
Cryptococcus.
What is the ring around the basidiomycete called?
Septum.
What is the bottom part of the basidiomycete called?
Hypha.
Name two fungi that belong to the ascomycete kingdom.
Candida, and aspergillus.
What are the spores of ascomycetes called?
ascospores.
What is the sac around ascospores called?
ascus.
Name a fungi that fits into the zygomycete kingdom.
Rhizopus.
What are the spores called in zygomycetes.
zygospores.
What are dermatophytic fungal infections caused by?
Dermatophytes.
What area of the body do dermatophytes target, and why?
Skin - because they digest keratin as a nutrient source.
What type of infections do dermatophytes result in?
Ring-worm like infections.
Name a fungi responsible for dermatophytic infection.
Pityriasis Versicolour. - malassezia
what is formed on the skin by pityriasis versicolour.
hyphae
Where is candida a commensal?
GI tract.
Fungi is known as an opportunistic pathogen. what does this mean?
They attack people when they are immunocompromised.
