Treatment and Prevention Pt. 3 Flashcards
Can addiction be prevented?
many factors in the path to addiction can be prevented
Primary prevention
- avoidance of substace imsuse before it has a chance to occur
- “just say no” advertising toward adolescents
Secondary prevention
- interventions when signs of substance use problems begin to appear
- legal system encourages alc education courses whenarrested w DUI
Tertiary prevention
- treamtnet interventaions w people well beyond the early stages of substance misuse or dependence
What are the 3 models of prevention?
- sociocultural
- distribution of consumption model
- proscriptive model
Sociocultural model of prevention idea
- social norms directly influence use/abuse of psychoactive substances
- primarily geared toward alcohol use
3 basic components of sociocultural model of prevention
- emphasis on the culture’s normative structure
- a need to integrate drinking into socially meaningful activities
- a focus on providing for the gradual socialixation of drinking behavior
Does socrocultural model of prevention prohibit alc use?
no believes moderation is key
Sociocultural model issues
- US has diverse cultures, subcultures, customs, and values
- doesn’t accoun for the value/pleasure attache to heavy drinking or substance use
- assumes change in cultural attitude=behavioral change
- doesn’t conside physical problems asociated w alc and drug use
What does the sociocultural model of prevention assume
that changes in cultural attitude = behavioral change
Where is sociocultural model currently in use
- advertising for problems of driving after drinking
Distribution of consumption model model of prevention idea
primarily focused on alcohol
- based on consistent statistical distribution of alcohol consumption across cultures
3 central propositions of distribution of consumption model of prevention
- Proportion of heavy alcohol uses in a given population is positively correlated with the mean level of alcohol consumption in that population
- heavy alc consumption icnreases probability of negative alc-related consequences (mental/emotional, physical, and social)
- Society should attempt to reduce negative consequences of alcohol by restricting availability of alcohol (ex. increasing price)
Distribution of consumption model of prevention issues
- Purely descriptive, doesn’t provide insight into reasons why people drink or influence of environment
- normal drinkers and heavy drinkers would likely respond differently to efforts in reducing of restructuring alcohol availaility
Proscriptive model of prevention idea
- if there is no use of the substance, then there can be no problem
- moral stance: “good” people don’t use drugs
