Treating Phobias (Flooding & SD) - PSYCHOPATHOLOGY Flashcards
what is flooding
a form of behavioural therapy used to treat phobias and other anxiety disorder
what happens within flooding
a client us immediately exposed to (or imagines) a form of the threatening situation until the anxiety is extinguished
what is counterconditioning
learning a new response to a stimulus
how is counterbalancing used in flooding
the patients are taught to relax when they see the feared stimulus instead of feel afraid
what is reciprocal inhibition
the idea that you cannot feel afraid and relaxed at the same time - one emotion prevents the other
first stage in systematic descenation
agreeing a hierarchy
second stage in systematic descenation
teach relaxation techniques
third stage in systematic descenation
gradual exposure to feared stimulus hierarchy
what occurs in systematic descenation
reciprocal inhibition which causes counterconditioning
