Transport Vessels Flashcards
Arteries
Thick walls (very muscular), carries blood under high pressure to the body, from heart
- heartbeat –> pulse w/in artery
Capillaries
One cell thick (very thin), carries blood to cells via diffusion, to cells
*site of exchange
capillaries exchange
oxygen + nutrients and is given carbon dioxide + waste
Veins
Thin walls (less muscular), carries blood under low pressure back to the heart, **to heart
one-way flap
peristaltic activity also takes place in the veins to keep blood moving one way
ICF (Intracellular Fluid and Lymph)
Fluid forced out of capillaries and bathes the cell
*all material exchange is dissolved w/in the ICF
Lymph
excess ICF is collected into the lymphatic system (vessels) and becomes a lymph
Inferior Vena Cava
lymph is drained back into the large veins at the right ventricle of the heart
Major Lymphatic Systems
have lymph nodes where phagocytes filter bacteria and dead cells from the lymph
