Disorders of the Transport System Flashcards
Disorders of the transport system
hypertension, blockage, narrowing, anemia, leukemia
hypertension
elevated arterial BP
causes: stress, diet, hereditary, smoking [nicotine], and old age
result: damage to artery lining and cardiac weakness
Blockage (coronary thrombosis)
heart attack
causes: cardiac O2 deprivation
result: cardiac cell death
Narrowing (coronary artery)
Angina Pectoris (chest pain)
causes: temporary O2 shortage to cardiac cell muscle
result: intense pain in the chest along with the left arm and shoulder
Anemia (low RBC count)
O2 carrying insufficiency
causes: decrease RBC; hemoglobin; iron in diet
result: tire easily and decrease in energy
Leukemia
WBC cancer
causes: massive production of WBC w/in bone marrow
