Muscles Flashcards
muscle tissue of the human body
includes skeletal, smooth, cardiac muscles
skeletal muscles
striated muscle w/ multiple nuclei [voluntary]
- attach to bones of the skeleton
- operate in antagonist pairs -> 1 flexor and 1 extensor
example of skeletal muscles
bicep - flexor = contracts
triceps - extensors = extends/stretches away
*biceps contracts -> triceps -> relax and vice versa
Smooth muscles
NON striated muscle [involuntary]
*also called visceral muscle
*found lining the digestive organs and arteries and internal organs
think peristalsis
cardiac muscle
striated muscle w/ 1 nucleus [involuntary]
*structure different to skeletal muscles
Ligaments
connects bones together (at their ends) where movable joints are formed
*tough and elastic connective tissue (can stretch)
Tendons
attach muscles to bones
*fibrous cords (tough and inelastic) connective tissue (can’t stretch)
