Nervous System Flashcards
nerve cells
3 types of neurons
Sensory neuron
wiring -> sense organ (receptor)
to brain and spinal cord
motor neuron
wiring -> brain and spinal cord
——> effector organ (muscle or gland)
to
Interneurons
location: brain and spinal cord
wiring -> transmits nerve impulses from sensory neurons to motor neurons
Central Nervous System (CNS)
Brain and spinal cord
PNS
Nerve outside the CNS
The Brain
3 major types
cerebrum
largest part, initiates all voluntary/conscious movements
cerebellum
below and behind cerebrum, coordinates all motor activity and maintains the body’s balance
Medulla
Base of brain and connects to the spinal cord, involuntary activities
ex: breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, peristalsis
Spinal cord
the medulla is continuous with the spinal cord, spinal cord coordinates between brain and other body structures
Sense receptors
Transmitted by sensory neurons to spinal cord
“throughout the body”
Interneurons (second function of spinal cord)
transmits impulses to the brain
“within spinal cord”
Brain
impulses carried to motor neurons throughout the spinal cord
Spinal cord
to appropriate effectors - muscle or gland
