Transport Flashcards
Blood
Plasma with suspended RBC, WBC, and platelets
Plasma
contains everything
Red blood cells (RBC)
most numerous, loses nucleus when mature
contains pigment called hemoglobin (Fe) is produced in bone marrow
White blood cells
larger than RBC, has 1 or more nuclei and is also produced in the bone marrow and lymph nodes
A type of white blood cells
phagocytes and lymphocytes
Phagocytes
soldiers that engulf bacteria and leave capillaries with ameboid motion
Lymphocytes
antibodies that inactivate antigens
Antigen
Antibody reaction = immune response
Platelets
Cell fragments consisting of cytoplasm, surrounded by a cell membrane and has no nucleus
Blood clotting
break in a blood vessel = causes platelet to rupture and release an enzyme that starts the clotting reactions
Platelet enzymes
converts fibrinogen into fibrin which forms a mesh work “web” of fibers across the wound
mesh work “web” traps blood cells in turn, forming a clot that stops bleeding
