Human Body Flashcards
GI (gastrointestinal) contractions
Peristalsis (1 way direction)
GI accessory organs
Liver, gallbladder, and pancreas
Oral cavity
Teeth, salivary glands, tongue, esophagus
Teeth
Mechanical breakdown (increases surface area of food)
Salivary glands
Amylase (starch breakdown, 1st initial step)
Tongue
Mixes food w/ saliva and pushes bolus to the back of the mouth
Esophagus
Bolus movement to stomach via peristalsis
Stomach: mechanical digestion
Gastric glands release HCI and gastric protease
HCI
Decreases PH which activates gastric protease
Small intestine: convoluted tube
(Folds on itself) convoluted tube increases surface area, glands w/in the small intestine secrete enzymes that digest the following
- proteins
- lipids
- disaccharides
Liver
Produce bile that is stored w/in the gallbladder
Bile
1st function: fat breakdown via emulsification
2nd function: neutralizes acidic food coming from the stomach
Pancreas
Pancreatic juice: released protease, lipases, and amylase (starch breakdown)
Complete chemical digestion
Pancreatic juices + small intestinal enzymes
Villi (fingerlike projections)
Villi line the intestine and increase the surface area to absorb chemically broken down food [amino acids, fatty acids, disaccharides], contains a lacteal
