Common symptoms of hypothyroidism
• fatigue
• Depression
• Brian fog
• Sleepiness or excessive sleep
• Cold intolerance
• Weight gain
• Dry skin
• Hair thinning
• Brittle nails
• Constipation
• Irregular periods
• Infertility
• Low libido
• Hoarseness
• Muscle cramps or weakness

Signs of hypothyroidism
• Bradycardia

Lab findings of hypothyroidism
• High TSH and low FT4
• High cholesterol
• Anemia
Common symptoms of hyperthyroidism
• anxiety
• Insomnia
• Tremors
• Irritability
• Difficulty concentrating
• Heat intolerance
• Weight loss
• Sweating
• Palpitations
• Increased BP
• Frequent bowel movements
• Irregular or light periods
• Hair thinning
• Warm skin
• Itching
Signs of hyperthyroidism
• tachycardia
• Tremor
• Weight loss
• Bulging eyes
• Raised lesions on the skin
Lab findings of hyperthyroidism
• low TSH
• High FT4
Treatment of hypo
• levothyroxine - replaces missing hormone
• 1.6mcg/kg/day
• Repeat TSH and FT4 6-8 weeks after starting or adjusting the dose
• On empty stomach
• Avoid taking with antacids or Ca
• Fearful monitoring if pregnant as thyroid hormoes are essential for fetal development
Treatment of hyper
• anti thyroid meds - methimazole/carbimazole at 10-30mg daily - inhibit thyroid hormone production
• Beta blockers - propranolol to control symptoms
• Radioactive iodine therapy - long term treatment
