Glucagon W3 Flashcards
What is glucagon
Hormone with effects that are laregely opposite to insulin (antagonistic hormone)
How many amino acids does it have
31
How does it act
By stimulation of Cell surface G-protein-coupled-receptors
Increases cAMP within the cell
When is it secreted
During times of fasting between meals from the a-cells of the islets of langerhans
Decrease in glucose = increase in glucagon
Target organ
Liver
Is secreted into hepatic portal vein
What does it promote
The breakdown of energy stores raising the level of energy source in the blood
Effects on carb metabolism
Increase blood sugar, glycogenolysis and gluoneogenesis
Decrease glycoeenesis
Effect on at metabolism
Increase level of fatty acids in bloood and lipolysis
Decrease triglyceride synthesis
Effects on protein metabolism - liver sonly
Increase proteolysis in liver
Decrease protein synthesis in liver
No significant effect on blood amino acid level
