chronic pancreatitis
Continuous, prolonged, inflammatory and fibrosing process of the pancreas. Can be due to chronic alcohol use, obstruction by gallstones, tumor, pseudocysts, trauma, systemic diseases and cystic fibrosis.
Obstructive pancreatitis
inflammation of sphincter of Oddi associated with gallstones
Clinical Manifestations
· Abdominal pain (heavy, gnawing feeling or sometimes burning and cramp like) food or antacids do not relieve pain
· Pancreatic insufficiency
· Malabsorption with weight loss
· Constipation
· Mild jaundice with dark urine
· Steatorrhea
Diabetes

Analgesics (morphine, fentanyl patch)
nutritional therapy for chronic pancreatitis
· Small, bland, frequent meals that are low in fat
· No smoking, alcohol, caffeinated beverages
enzymes and pancreatitis
· Pancreatic enzyme products such as pancrelipase contain amylase like pace and trypsin (replace deficient pancreatic enzymes) usually taken with meals or snacks
what determines the effectiveness of enzymes
Monitor for steatorrhea to help determine effectiveness of enzymes
