Topic 10: Muscular Dystrophy Flashcards
Muscular Dystrophy
group of genetic diseases characterized by progressive symmetric wasting of skeletal muscle without evidence od neurologic involvement
-Gradual loss of strength with increasing disability and deformity occurs
diagnostic testing for muscular dystrophy
Genetic testing can detect a mutation in the DMD gene and confirm diagnosis
therapy for MD
-No definitive therapy is available to stop progressive muscle wasting of MD
-corticosteroids
Corticosteroid therapy is part of the standard care as it
may slow disease progression for up to 2 years
Main treatment goals for MD are
to preserve mobility and independence through exercise, PT, and use of assistive devices
Focus care on keeping client as
AS ACTIVE AS POSSIBLE. Prolonged bed rest should be avoided because immobility can cause more muscle wasting.
