ALS
“Lou Gehrig’s disease” rare progressive neuromuscular disorder marked by loss of motor neurons. Death usually occurs 2-5 years after diagnosis
clinical manifestation for ALS
· Progressive muscle weakness and atrophy are a classic sign
Death often occurs from compromised respiratory function
communication interventions from ALS
· Facilitating communication; client is still cognitively fully there!!
nursing interventions for ALS
· Reducing aspiration risk
· Early identification of respiratory insufficiency
· Decrease pain from muscle weakness
· Decrease risk of fall
· Provide diversional activities
Support patient and caregiver emotionally
drug for ALS
Riluzole (Rilutek) can slow progression of ALS
