Topic 4 Part 2 Flashcards
What happens if their is an increase in co2?
The chemoreceptor is activated by the medulla oblongata (increase in breathing, expels co2)
What do oxygen chemoreceptors do?
Detect low oxygen levels and are found in the carotid and aortic arteries
What happens when you increase breathing
Oxygen levels rise, carbon levels decrease
What is bronchitis?
-narrowing of air passages
-inclination of Lucious lining in bronchial tubes
-decreased air movement in bronchi
What is asthma ?
Airways are inflamed due to irritation, and bro chilled constrict due to muscles spasms
What is emphysema?
Walls of alveoli become inflamed destroying air sacs (stretched and ruptured) leading to less SA for gas exchange (decreased oxygen levels.
> makes it difficult to exhale
-oftenly caused by smoking
What does cigarette smoke do to cells?
Irritates them, increasing mucous production
What does tar of cigarette smoke do to cilia?
Slows action of cilia and becomes trapped in mucous
Do chemicals in smoke cause cancerous cells?
Yes
What does cigarette do in relation to trying to get dirt out.
Difficulty breathing, wheezing and coughing
What is pneumonia?
Lung infection where the alveoli fill with pys or fluid.
-makes gas exchange difficult because there is less space for gas exchange
