heart, Topic 1 Flashcards
what are veins in relation to blood?
blood vessels containing blood flowing to the heart.
what are arteries in relation to blood?
have blood flow flowing from the heart
what side of the heart contains deoxygneated blood?
right side
what side of the heart contains oxygenated blood?
left side
where does the superior vena cava recieve blood from?
head, neck and upper limbs
where does the inferior vena cava recieve blood from?
torso, guts and lower limbs
where do both the superior and inferior vana cavas end up?
in the right atrium
how many valves does the heart have?
4
what is the purpose of the valves?
keep blood moving in the right direction and not flow backwards
where does blood exit the right atrium?
through the tricuspid valve
-enters the right ventricle
where does the blood exit the right ventricle through?
pulmonary valve
-eneters pulmonary artery
does the pulmonary artery contain deoxygenated blood?
yes
what does the pulmonary artery split into?
right (goes to right lung) and left (goes to left lung) pulmonary arteries.
what happens with blood in the lungs?
discards carbon dioxide and takes in oxygen.
how does blood come back from the lungs?
through the pulmonary vein
-enters the left atrium
how is blood pumped into the left and right ventricles?
through the mitral valve (left) and the tricuspid valve (right)
how does the oxygenated blood leave the left ventricle?
through the aortic semilunar valve
-enters the aortic arch
what does the aorta do?
Is the largest artery.
distributes oxygenated blood throughout the body
how many branches does the aorta arch have?
3, which supply the head and arms with blood.
why do the aorta split when reaching the abdomen?
to supply both legs with blood
