TOPIC 1 - THE CELL Flashcards
He used a microscope to examine a thin slice of cork (dead plant cells). He is responsible for naming “CELL”
Robert Hooke
When was cell discovered?
1665
Year of discovery of microorganisms
1673
He was the first to view microorganisms by using a simple microscope to view pond water & scrapings from his teeth.
Anton Van Leeuwenhoek
German botanist that concluded that all plants were made of cells.
Matthias Schleiden
German medical doctor observed, under the microscope, cells are dividing.
Rudolf Virchow
German zoologist that concluded that all animals were made of cells.
Theodore Schwann
Give the three postulates of cell theory.
- All living things are made of cells.
- Cells are the basic unit of structure and function in an organism.
- Cells come from the reproduction of existing cells (cell division)
Cells that lack a nucleus or membrane bound organelles including bacteria. Simplest type of cell; Single, circular chromosome.
Prokaryotes
Cells that HAVE a nucleus and membrane-bound organelles. Includes protists, fungi, plants, and animals. More complex type of cells.
Eukaryotes
Part of cell: Has selective permeability controlling what gets in and out of the cell.
Cell membrane
Part of the cell: Jelly-like fluid substance containing organelles.
Cytoplasm
Part of cell: Control center, contains the cell’s DNA
Nucleus
Part of the cell: Powerhouse of the cell and produces ATP.
Mitochondria
Part of the cell: Site where proteins are made.
Ribosomes
