Tongue and oral cavity Flashcards
What forms the roof of the oral cavity?
Hard and soft palates
What forms the floor of the oral cavity?
Mylohyoid mainly, hyoglosss, genioglossus, geniohyoid
What forms the lateral boundaries of the oral cavity?
Lips and cheeks
2 arches can be seen at the back of the oral cavity. 1 is larger and projects further into the midline, which is this?
Palatopharyngeal arch is larger
Palatoglossal arch is smaller
What is the sulcus terminals?
The boundary between the anterior 2/3 and posterior 1/3 of the tongue
What is the small fold of mucous membrane running from he floor of the mouth up the underside of the tongue
Frenulum
What vessel is very superficial on the underside fo the tongue?
Lingual vein
What artery and nerve can been seen on the underside fo the tongue?
Lingual artery and nerve
What innervates the anterior 2/3 of the tongue?
General sense = lingual nerve Special sense (taste) = chorda tympani (VII)
What innervates the posterior 1/3 of the tongue?
Glossopharyngeal
What papillae line the sulcus terminals?
a) Circumvallate papillae
b) Filiform papillae
c) Fungiform papillae
d) Foliate papillae
a
What papillae are not he dorsal surface of the anterior 2/3 of the tongue?
a) Circumvallate papillae
b) Filiform papillae
c) Fungiform papillae
d) Foliate papillae
b
What papillae are the most anterior?
a) Circumvallate papillae
b) Filiform papillae
c) Fungiform papillae
d) Foliate papillae
c
What papillae are found in 2 clusters no the side of the tongue?
a) Circumvallate papillae
b) Filiform papillae
c) Fungiform papillae
d) Foliate papillae
d
What are papillae?
Projections of the tongue containing taste buds. Increase tongue SA so can taste and feel more accurately
What are the extrinsic muscles of tongue?
Styloglossus, hyoglossus, genioglossus, palatoglossus
What innervates the extrinsic muscles of the tongue?
Hypoglossal nerve (XII) except for palatoglossus which is innervated by pharyngeal plexus via X
What is the function of hyoglossus?
Pulls sides of tongue down
What is the function of styloglossus?
Pulls side of tongue up and back
What is the function of genioglossus?
Pulls anterior tip forward
What is the function of palatoglossus?
Lifts the tongue
What are the intrinsic muscles of the tongue?
Superior longitudinal, inferior longitudinal, vertical, transverse
What is the function of superior and inferior longitudinal?
Shorten the tongue
What is the function of the vertical muscle?
Flatten the tongue
What is the function of the transverse muscle?
Narrow the tongue
What innervates the intrinsic muscles of?
XII
What is the relationship of the lingual nerve to the submandibular duct?
Wraps around
What nerve joins the lingual nerve?
Chorda tympani
Where is the lingual nerve in relation to mylohyoid and hyoglossus?
Deep to mylohyoid, superficial to hyoglossus
What does lingual nerve provide parasympathetic innervation to?
Submandibular ganglion
Where does the lingual nerve go?
To the tongue to provide general sensory innervation to the anterior 2/3
What artery wraps around XII?
Lingual artery
Where do the branches fo XII head?
Muscles of the tongue
What muscle is XII deep to?
Posterior digastric
What nerves innervate the tooth substance of the mandibular teeth?
Inferior alveolar nerve = posterior 5
Mental = anterior 3
What nerves innervate the mandibular gingiva?
Long buccal nerve = posterior buccal
Mental = anterior buccal
Lingual nerve = lingual gingiva
What nerves innervate the tooth substance of the maxillary teeth?
Posterior 3 = posterior superior alveolar nerve
Middle 2 = middles superior alveolar nerve
Anterior 3 = anterior superior alveolar nerve
What nerves innervate the maxillary gingiva?
Posterior superior alveolar nerve = posterior buccal
Infraorbital nerve = anterior buccal
Greater palatine = posterior lingual
Nasopalatine = anterior lingual
