Infratemporal fossa Flashcards
Boundaries
Lateral pterygoid plate, ramus and coronoid process of mandible, infra temporal surface of greater wing of sphenoid, squamous part of temporal, posterior wall of maxilla, styloid process
What muscles are found in ITF?
Lateral and medial pterygoid muscle
What nerves in the ITF?
V3
Chorda tympani
Where does V3 leave the skull?
Fo. ovale
Where does chorda tympani leave the skull?
Facial canal of petrous temporal bone and enters middle ear
What does chorda tympani innervate?
Taste to the anterior 2/3 of the tongue
What artery and vein are found in the ITF?
Maxillary artery and vein
What ganglion is found in the IFT?
Otic ganglion
What are the contents of the ITF?
Lateral and medial pterygoid muscle. V3 Chorda tympani Otic ganglion Maxillary artery Maxillary vein
Which muscle is deep?
Lateral or medial pterygoid muscle
Medial
What are the 2 heads oft he medial pterygoid plate?
Deep and superficial head
Describe the branching of V3 in ITF
Through fo. ovale and splits into anterior and poster division.
Anterior division gives long buccal nerve.
Posterior division gives lingual n, inferior alveolar n, n to mylohyoid, auriculotemporal n.
What are the innervations of anterior division of V3?
Mostly motor except fro long buccal nerve which is sensory to the skin over buccinator and posterior mandibular teeth
What are the innervation fo the posterior division of V3?
Mostly sensory except for nerve to mylohyoid which is motor to mylohyoid and anterior digastric.
Lingual nerve provides general sensory innervation to anterior 2/3 of tongue, mandibular buccal gingiva
Inferior alveolar nerve provides sensory innervation to the mandibular tooth substance and lingual gingiva.
Auriculotemporal nerve supplies to external ear, skin of the temple and temporomandibular joint
What are the 2 parts of the lateral pterygoid muscle?
Superior and inferior head
