Development of the face Flashcards
What are the 5 swellings that form on the developing face?
Frontonasal prominence
2x maxillary
2x mandibular
Why must the epithelium that covers the structures die?
Epithelium will not fuse, must die so mesoderm can fuse
How does the central portion of the nose form?
The medial nasal swellings on either side get pushed together as they grow and fuse in the midline
Where does the nasolacrimal duct form?
Between the fusion of the lateral nasal swelling and the maxillary swelling
What derives from the frontonasal prominence?
Forehead, nose, Philtrum, primary palate
What is derived from the maxillary prominence?
Upper part of cheek, maxilla, zygomatic bone, upper lip, secondary palate
What is derived from the mandibular prominence?
Lower lip, lower part of cheek, mandible
What swelling is the forehead derived from?
Frontonasal
What swelling is the Philtrum derived from?
Frontonasal
What swelling is the nose derived from?
Frontonasal
What swelling is the primary palate derived from?
Frontonasal
What swelling is the upper part of cheek derived from?
Maxillary
What swelling is the zygomatic bone derived from?
Maxillary
What swelling is the upper lip and secondary palate derived from?
Maxillary
What swelling is the lower cheek and mandible derived from?
Mandibular
At how many days in utero does the tongue start to develop?
28 days
What are the 2 swelling soft the tongue?
Tuberculum impar and hypobranchial eminence
What pharyngeal arch does the tubercular impair grow from?
Pharyngeal arch I
What does the tubercular impar form?
The anterior 2/3 of tongue
What CN innervates pharyngeal arch I hence what CN innervates the anterior 2/3 of tongue?
V (and chord tympani)
V3 and chord tympani
From which pharyngeal arch is the hypobranchial eminence derived from?
Pharyngeal arch II, III, IV
What does the hypobranchial eminence form?
3rd and 4th arch overgrow 2nd arch form the posterior 1/3 of tongue
What innervates the 3rd pharyngeal arch and hence the posterior 1/3 of tongue?
IX
What gives rise to the tongue muscles?
a) occipital somites
b) pharyngeal arch IV
c) pharyngeal pouch 4
d) pharyngeal arch III
a
What innervates the muscles of the tongue?
XII
From which pharyngeal arch is the epiglottis and arytenoid swellings derived?
IV
What creates the inter maxillary segment?
Fusion of the medial nasal prominences
What does the inter maxillary segment form?
Primary palate
What prominence is the primary palate formed from?
Frontonasal
What prominence is the secondary palate formed from?
Maxillary
What rooms from the maxillary prominence that will go on to form the secondary palate?
Palatal shelves
What happens as the palatal shelves grow?
Grow and shed epithelium, mesoderm fuse in the midline
What forms the primary palate?
Fusion of the medial nasal plates of the Frontonasal prominence
