Lymphatic drainage Flashcards
Functions of fascia (6)
Support structures Pathways for neurovascular structures Facilitate or constraint movement Sites of attachment for muscles Promote venous drainage Mechanical protection
3 routes of spread in the head and neck
Tissue planes and areas of loose connective tissue
Venous routes
Lymphatic system
How does infection spread through fascial planes?
Areas of loose connective tissue unite fascial planes. infections can destroy this space and allow infection to spread widely
What is the function of the lymphatic system?
Transport lymph around the body and help rid body of toxins
Where are lymph nodes found and what are their function?
Along lymphatic vessels and they filter the lymph
What do superficial lymph vessels drain?
Lymph from scalp, face and neck into the superficial ring of lymph nodes at the junction of head and neck
What are the superficial lymph nodes?
Occipital Mastoid Parotid Submandibular Submental Superficial nodes of neck along the external jugular vein
What are the deep lymph nodes?
Jugulo-digastric
Jugulo-omohyoid
What superficial lymph nodes drain into jugulo-digastric nodes?
Parotid, mastoid
What superficial lymph nodes drain into jugulo-omohyoid?
Submental, submandibular, occipital
What is the function of the deep lymph nodes?
They receive all of the drainage from the superficial lymph nodes
What is the retropharynegal space?
A space in the head and neck containing retropharyngeal lymph nodes - a potential site of infection spread
