Tissues Flashcards
What is the function of the epithelial tissue?
- covers the body sufraces
- lines cavities, organs and ducts
- forms glands
What are the characteristics of the epithelial tissue?
- densley packed
- lots of cell junctions
- attached to basement membrane
- avascular
- nerve supply
- frequent mitosis
What are the 2 metrics used to classify epithelial tissue?
- arrangement of layers
- cell shapes
What different ways can layers be arranged in epithelial tissue?
- simple : 1 layer
- stratified: multiple layers, stacked
- pseudostratified: same height as stratified but only actually 1 long cell.
What are the different cell shapes you can have for epithelial tissue?
- squamous (flat)
- cuboidal
- columnar
What are the characteristics of connective tissue?
- Made of cells and ECM
- No free surfaces
- highly vascularised
- has nerve supplly
What is the function of connective tissue?
- protects + supports body and organs
- binds organs together
- stores energy reserves (fat)
- provides immunity
What is the role of ECM in connective tissue?
- fibes in ECM give strength and support to tissue between the cells
made of fibres and ground substance
What categories do we classify the connective tissue into?
- Loose
- dense
- cartilage
- bone
- blood
What are the 4 types of tissue?
- epithelial tissue
- connective tissue
- muscular tissue
- nervous tissue
What is the role of the fibres in muscular tissue?
- Fibres provide motion, maintain posture, provide heat
What are the 3 types of muscular tissue?
- skeletal
- cardiac
- smooth
What is the function of the muscular tissue?
generates physical force to move the body
What are the 2 types of cells in nervous tissue?
- Neurons
- Neuroglia
What makes up neurons?
cells that have:
* cell body
* dendrites
* axons
