Cardiovascular Physiology Flashcards
What is the difference between systemic and pulmonary circulation?
Systemic: takes blood around the body
Pulmonary: takes blood to the lungs to be oxygenated
What is Haemodynamics?
The relationship between BP, blood flow and hydraulic resistance
What is Darcy’s law?
Q: fluid flow
P: pressure
K: hydraulic conductance
What is the relationship between CO, MAP and TPR?
cardiac output, mean arterial pressure, total peripheral resistance
What factors affect the resistance in a vessel?
- geometry
- fluid viscosity
What is the equation for resistance in a vessel?
where R = 1/k
What is a systolic blood pressure reading?
Pressure in the arteries when the heart has contracted (when all blood is forced out of heart)
What is a diasystolic blood pressure reading?
Pressure in the arteries when the heart has relaxed (when blood returns to the heart)
What is pulse pressure?
The difference between systolic and diastolic pressures.
How do we determine the MAP?
What is hypotension
When MAP<normal
What is hypertension
When MAP>normal
What type of flow is shown here?
uniform fluid flow
laminar
What type of flow is shown here?
Turbulent due to non uniform vessel
