training aimed at introducing new employees to a business and its procedures
what should induction training do?
- should focus on things that will reduce employee anxiety
- should allow employees to become productive quicker
what is on-the-job training?
employees receive training whilst remaining in the workplace
what are the advantages of on the job training?
- generally cost effective
- opportunity to learn whilst doing
- training alongside real colleagues
what are the disadvantages of on the job training?
- quality depends on ability of trainer and time available
- bad habits may be passed on
- potenial disruption to production
what is off the job training?
employees are taken away from their place of work to be trained
what are the advantages of off the job training?
- wider range of skills/qualifications can be obtained
- can learn from outside specialists
what are the disadvantages of off the job training?
- more expensive
- lost working time and potential output from employee
- new employees will still need induction training
what is academic training?
involves theoretical knowledge and skills e.g. uni qualifications
what is vocational training?
teaches hands-on, applied skills such as carpentry
what is an apprenticeship?
long term development programme for workers to learn skills while they work through a mixture of training methods to earn a qualification
what are the advantages of apprenticeships?
- earn income whilst learning
- practical and technical learning
what are the disadvantages of apprenticeships?
- low pay
- specific qualifications
what are the benefits of training?
- employees will understand the ins and outs of the business –> productive
- if works, sales may increase
what are the disadvantages of training?
- can be costly
- may not be worth it
