explain what is meant by appraisal?
a formal assessment of employee’s performance
what is the purpose of appraisal?
- give staff focus
- make staff feel valued
- set standard/expectation
- pay/training decisions
- record issues (collect evidence)
what is managerial appraisal?
manager examines and evaluates employee’s performance
what are the advantages of managerial appraisal?
- employees receive expert input from manager
- makes subsequent actions e.g. pay
what are the disadvantages of managerial appraisal?
- manager may not work closely with employees to know their strengths and development areas
what is self-assessment appraisal?
employees assess their own performance, often using a tick and cross sheet
what is the benefit of self-assessment
comparing employees view to managers view
what is the disadvantage of self-assessment
- bias, not honest –> employee may be under/over critical
what is the 360º appraisal?
involves an employee receiving feedback from several people in the organisation
more appropriate for staff who work in large businesses with multiple teams
what is peer assessment appraisal?
- when appraisal is carried out by work colleagues at the same level
what are the advantages of 360º appraisal?
- broader picture of performance obtained
what are the disadvantages of 360º appraisal?
- could end up with too much information (conflicting) to base targets on
- person’s friends or enemies might be biased
hat are the advantages of peer appraisal?
- very clear idea on how employee is contributing to the team
hat are the disadvantages of peer appraisal?
- may end up being overly positive/negative depending on relationships
factors that make appraisals effective?
- honesty from managers and employees
- work towards a goal (+check ups)
- identify strengths to motivate, value and thank employee
