The Peptide Bond and Biologically Active Peptides Flashcards
How are amino acids normally connected?
Through a condensation reaction that forms a peptide bond.
Carboxylate and Amino group of separate molecules react. Ends with bond of the amino acids and water as byproduct.
What kind of bond is the red bond?
Peptide bond.
In living organisms, how are peptide chains/peptide bonds made?
Made through the use of ribosomes.
What’s the convention for writing amino acid chains? Why?
From N-Terminus to C-terminus.
Because that’s the way they are synthesized, N to C.
What is the pKa of the C-terminus?
About 4
What is the pKa or the N terminus?
About 8
What is one role Glutathione play?
Role in maintaining the reducing environment in cells. Ie. NO free reactive oxygen in the cell.
What are the three amino acids in this chain? And what is this structure called? (What isn’t connected normally?)
Glu-Cys-Gly
How does this reaction help the cell?
Two Reduced Glutathione reacts with oxygen in order to create a disulfide oxidized form, water then is what uses up the oxygen.
What are the 5 key characteristics of bacterial ribosomes?
What are 5 major characteristics of ribosomes in general?
