Lipid Components of Biological Membranes Flashcards
Rate your confidence in lipid knowledge
What is this molecule?
What do triglycerides main do?
It’s how fat is stored for energy in us.
Almost no polar character at all, meaning they don’t form bilayers or miscelles.
Instead they form large lipid droplets stored in Adipocytes (and other sites).
Explain structurally why Butter fat is a soft solid and room temperature but Canola oil is liquid. (Hint: They are both fatty acids)
What membrane lipid is this formula? Extra: can you name every part of the formula?
Summary test: can you name all the general polar head groups of Glycerophospholipids?
Name the two Fatty Acyl Chains
Define the components that classify a membrane lipid as a Cardiolipin?
What components make up this type of membrane lipid? What is it called?
- Condensation reaction!
- Usually (not always) 2nd reaction happens to add a fatty acid to NH2 group, to make Ceramide.
What are the three main derivatives of Sphingolipids polar head group? (Can you name the molecules?)
Some are VERY similar to glycerolphosphlipids. Only diffrence is it’s a Serine backbone not a glycerol!
What type of molecule is this? What’s important to know?
What membrane lipid is this?
Important function for fluidity.
What are the three important structures you need to know about steroids?
Explain how lipids control entropy and what is notable about their amphipathic lipid nature.
Explain how structured determines if a lipid can make miscelle versus a bilayer?
