The Hydrophobic Effect Flashcards
1
Q
Define hydrophobic interactions.
A
Cause non-polar groups to come together in aqueous solutions.
2
Q
When a hydrocarbon and water interact, what happens energetically? (Gibbs free energy)
A
No change in enthalpy.
Process solely driven by entropy.
3
Q
Why is it efficient to minimize the interaction of hydrophobic molecules with water?
A
Because when water is next to the hydrophobic molecules, it restricts free rotational movement of the water molecule.(Decreasing entropy)
4
Q
What determines what kind of aggregate (micelle vs bilayer, etc) forms is dependent on what? (5)
A
- The properties in shape of the amphiphile.
- pH
- Temperature
- Concentration of ions
- And more
