The Kidneys-PAPER2 Flashcards
What is the job of the kidneys?
Filtering the blood
What happens if the kidneys stop working?
Toxic waste starts to build up
Once the kidneys have cleaned the blood, what do they make ?
Urine to remove it from the body.
What substances are absorbed back into the blood?
glucose, some ions and the right amount of water.
What is Urea?
Waste products which have been converted from ammonia (as it is toxic) into urea in the liver.
Where is urea transported to?
The kidneys where it is filtered out of the blood and excreted from the body in urine.
The body much constantly ……. the water coming in against the water going out.
Balance
How do we lose water from our bodies?
From our skin when we sweat and from the lungs when breathing out.
Why does suppressing the amount of ADH, mean that you may become dehydrated?
The kidneys will reabsorb less water so too much water is lost from the body as urine.
What does a dialysis machine do?
Keeps the concentration of dissolved substances in the blood at normal levels and removes waste substances.
In a dialysis machine what happens?
The persons blood flows between a partially permeable membrane, which is permeable to ions and waste substances. The dialysis fluid has the same conc of dissolved ions and glucose as healthy blood meaning useful dissolved ions arent lost from the blood during dialysis.
How regularly do you have to go to a dialysis session?
3 times a week for 3/4 hours.
What are some advantages and disadvantages of dialysis?
It is expensive
Not a very pleasant experience
Time consuming
May causes blot clots/ infections
Buys them time until an organ donor is found.
Reliable
Advantages and disadvantages of kidneys transplants
Cheaper in the long run
Not time consuming
Can be rejected
Hard to find donors
What is the purpose of the partially permeable membrane in a dialysis machine?
It allows ions and waste substances to diffuse out of the blood into the dialysis fluid but not large molecules like proteins so they wont be lost from the blood.
