Q

Why does suppressing the amount of ADH, mean that you may become dehydrated?

A

The kidneys will reabsorb less water so too much water is lost from the body as urine.

Q

In a dialysis machine what happens?

A

The persons blood flows between a partially permeable membrane, which is permeable to ions and waste substances. The dialysis fluid has the same conc of dissolved ions and glucose as healthy blood meaning useful dissolved ions arent lost from the blood during dialysis.

Q

What are some advantages and disadvantages of dialysis?

A

It is expensive
Not a very pleasant experience
Time consuming
May causes blot clots/ infections

Buys them time until an organ donor is found.

15
Q

What is the purpose of the partially permeable membrane in a dialysis machine?

A

It allows ions and waste substances to diffuse out of the blood into the dialysis fluid but not large molecules like proteins so they wont be lost from the blood.

16
Q

What are proteins (or excess amino acids) converted into?

A

Fats and carbohydrates as these CAN be stored by the body.

17
Q

What is deamination?

A

The process of excess amino acids being converted into fats and carbs in the liver

18
Q

What is a waste product from deamination?

A

Ammonia which is toxic hence why it’s converted to urea in the LIVER

19
Q

What 3 substances are removed in urine?

A

Water, ions and urea.

20
Q

What hormone controls the concentration of urine?

A

ADH

21
Q

Why does the pituitary gland release ADH?

A

To control the amount of water reabsorbed by the kidney tubules (more ADH if water content low and less ADH if it’s too high)
