Ecologgyyyyyy Flashcards
What is a population
Total number of organisms of the same species living in the same area
What is an ecosystem?
The biotic and abiotic parts of an environment ad how they interact.
What do plants compete for
light and space as well as water and minerals.
What do animals compete for?
Food, water and mating partners
What are the 4 biotic factors that effect a community
Availability of food, new predator, competition (within species) and new pathogens
Name the abiotic factors affecting a community
Light intensity Temperature Water pH and mineral content of soil Wind direction/intensity Carbon dioxide and oxygen
What is an extremophile
Organisms adapted to living in very extreme conditions.
How are camels structurally adapted?
Have a hump (store of fat) to allow heat loss from other parts of the body. This reduces water loss from sweating. Long eyelashes to keep dust out of their eyes.
How are camels functionally adapted
Produce dry faeces and concentrated urine to reduce water loss
Name a behavioural adaptation
Nocturnal so they avoid the heat of the daytime and live underground to avoid predators.
How are animals adapted to the cold (Structurally)
Fur on feet to reduce heat loss to the ice and snow
Blubber acts as a thick insulating layer (less heat lost)
Small ears to reduce surface area to reduce heat loss
White to blend in with snow and hide from predators/prey
How are plants adapted?
Cacti adapted to dry condition. No leaves at all to reduce water loss, spines protect them from animals
Extensive shallow roots allow cacti to catch as much rainfall as possible and store it in their stem.
What is a stable community?
Where all abiotic and biotic factors are balanced
