Plant Diseases Flashcards
What does TMV do?
Attacks chloroplasts, breaks down chlorophyll.
What eventually happens after a plant gets TMV?
Leaves the plant useless for crop, so is bad for farmers
What is TMV?
A communicable disease that targets plants.
Why is it important that plants do not get diseases?
As we depend on plants as a food source, so our food supply would be at risk.
Also many of our useful drugs come from plants.
What is a strategy that plants have against being eaten by pests?
The ability to make unpleasant and sometimes toxic chemicals in their tissues.
What is Quinine and what’s it useful for?
It is a plant that is a treatment for malaria.
What types of protection do trees have from diseases?
Their bark.
How are plants able to communicate with animals?
Using scent to attract pollinating insects, which also leads to pollination and reproduction.
How can plants communicate with other plants?
A tree that is under attack from something, can release ethene to warn other plants of danger. The other tree then detects this and starts making a toxic chemical in its leaves to prevent the animal eating it.
What does a lack of nitrate ions mean about the plant?
stunted growth as nitrogen is needed for protein synthesis
What is chlorosis?
A lack of magnesium ion because magnesium is needed to make chlorophyll
