Adrenaline and Thyroxine-PAPER2 Flashcards
Adrenaline is a……. released by the ……
Hormone released by the adrenal glands
When is adrenaline released?
In response to a stressful or scary situation, you brain sends nervous impulses to the adrenal glands which then secrete adrenaline .
What does adrenaline do?
Triggers mechanisms that increase the supply of oxygen and glucose to cells in the brain and muscles. e.g adrenaline increases heart rate.
How can your body control the levels of hormones in the blood?
Using negative feedback systems which trigger a response if a body system isn’t at the correct condition.
What is thyroxine?
A hormone released by the the thyroid gland which is in the neck.
Why is thyroxine important?
It stimulates protein synthesis for growth and development as well as playing an important role in regulating the basal metabolic rate. (makes chemical reactions take place at a faster rate)
Why does adrenaline make the heart beat faster?
To deliver more oxygen and glucose to the brain and muscles for respiration
Where is the thyroid gland found?
Base of the neck
Where are the adrenal glands found?
above the kidneys
What is the level of thyroxine in the blood controlled by?
Negative Feedback
