Endocrine System &Blood Glucose-PAPER2 Flashcards
The other way to send information around the body apart from along nerves is by using what?
Hormones
What are hormones?
Chemical molecules released directly into the blood. They are carried in the blood to other parts of the body but only affect particular cells in particular organs called target organs.
How do hormones travel through the body?
In the blood
What are hormones produced in?
Glands called endocrine glands
Hormones tend to have relatively…… effects
long lasting.
Give examples of glands and what they do
Pituitary gland: Produces many hormones that regulate body conditions. It is sometimes called the master gland as these hormones act on other gland directing them to release hormones that bring change.
Ovaries: Produce oestrogen which is involved in the menstrual cycle
Pancreas: Produces insulin which is used to regulate blood glucose levels.
What are some differences between nerves and hormones?
Nerves: very fast action
act for short time and on a very precise area.
Hormones: Slower action, act for a long time, act in a more general way.
Carbohydrates put….. in the blood.
glucose
Vigorous exercise removes too much…..
glucose from the blood
How can excess glucose be stored?
A glycogen in the liver and muscles.
The level of glucose must be kept….. . Changes are monitored and controlled by the pancreas, using the hormones….. and…… in a negative feedback cycle.
The level of glucose must be kept steady. Changes are monitored and controlled by the pancreas using the hormones, insulin and glucagon in a negative feedback cycle.
What is glucagon?
A hormone that helps control the level of glucose in the blood.
What is glucose?
A type of sugar.
What is diabetes?
A condition that affects your ability to be able to control your blood sugar level.
Type 1 diabetes is when….
The pancreas produces little or no insulin. This mean a person’s blood glucose levels can rise to a level that can kill them.
