Plant Hormones-PAPER2 Flashcards
What is auxin?
A plant hormone that controls growth near the tips of shoots and roots.
Where is auxin produced?
The tips
Shoots grow towards…
light, when this happens more auxin accumulates on the side that is in the shade than the side that’s in the light.
What causes plants to grow towards the light?
More auxin accumulates on the side in the shade meaning that the shaded side will elongate faster so the shoot bends towards the light.
What other ways does auxin come in handy?
Killing weeds
Growing from cuttings with rooting powder
Growing cells in the tissue culture
What is gibberellin?
Another type of plant growth hormone.
What other ways does gibberellin come in handy?
Inducing flowering.
What is ethene?
A gas produced by aging parts of a plant and it influences the growth
Also stimulates enzymes that cause fruit to ripen.
What is ethene used for?
Speeding up the ripening of fruit, meaning that fruit can be picked when unripe and firmer and ripened on the way to the supermarket.
What is phototropism?
Plant shoots growing towards the light
Why does cutting off the tip of plants stop them growing towards the light?
As the hormone, Auxin, is produced here
What does the foil on top of the tips of plants show us considering they also don’t grow towards the light?
That the tips are sensitive to light.
In shoots Auxin….
Triggers cell growth.
Light causes auxin to….
concentrate on the darker side of the shoot tip
Shoots grow……. gravity
