How can stents be used to reduce the risk of heart attacks in people with coronary heart disease?
They keep the arteries open which allows the supply of oxygenated blood to continue through to the rest of the cells- uninterrupted.
What are advantages of stents?
Reduce the risk of strokes
Statins May also prevent other diseases.
Disadvantages of stents?
Long term drug needs to be taken regularly
Isn’t instant.
What is a benign tumour?
A tumour that stays in one place, it isn’t normally dangerous and it isn’t cancerous.
What is a malignant tumour?
Tumour grows and spreads to neighbouring healthy tissues. cells can break off and spread to other parts of the body by travelling in the bloodstream. These tumours can be fatal and they ARE cancerous.
Give examples of risk factors for cancer
Smoking, obesity, UV exposure, Viral infection
faulty genes.
What is meant by a risk factor?
Risks that can increase the chance of some diseases.
What are tumours a result of?
Body cells dividing out of control.
Risk factors for non-communicable diseases
Smoking, high alcohol intake, Radiation exposure
Why is too much cholesterol a bad thing?
It can cause a build up of fatty deposits in arteries.
What is this difference between a biological/mechanical valve?
Biological valves are taken from humans or mammals like cows and pigs. Mechanical valves are man-made.
advantages of artificial hearts?
Keep people alive until a donor is found. They’re also less likely to be rejected than a donor heart.
disadvantages of artificial hearts?
Surgery can lead to bleeding and infection
Patient has to take drugs to thin their blood which cause problems with bleeding if they’re hurt.
