Animal tissues, organs and organ systems Flashcards
What is ,and what are the functions of, the digestive system?
an organ system in which several
organs work together to digest and absorb food.
How are enzymes related to your digestive system?
Enzymes break down the substances we eat. That means enzymes break down proteins, cellulose, starches
How do specific metabolic pathways help in plants?
specific metabolic pathways can produce glucose and chlorophyll.
How do specific metabolic pathways help in animals?
can produce vitamins and haemoglobin
How are enzymes helpful in metabolism?
Enzymes are protein catalysts that speed biochemical reactions.
How does the temperature affect enzymes?
As the temperature increases, so does the rate of reaction. But very high temperatures denature enzymes.
What temperature will the rate of reaction be most effective at?
Around 37 degrees (body temp).
How does pH affect the enzyme?
Depending on where the enzyme works for e.g. in the stomach would have a low pH of about 2 (acidic) but if it worked in the intestines it would be around 7.5 (neutral).
