Circulatory System-Blood Flashcards
What is the job of RBC?
To carry oxygen from the lungs to all cells in the body.
How is the shape of a RBC adapted for its job?
Has a large surface area for absorbing lots of oxygen.
Why don’t RBC have nuclei?
It allows more room to carry oxygen
RBC contain a red pigment called?
Haemoglobin
How are WBC adapted?
Some can change shape to engulf microorganisms. (Process called phagocytosis)
What other way can WBC’s fight microorganisms?
By producing antibodies to fight microorganisms as well as antitoxins to neutralise any toxins produced by the microorganisms.
What do WBC’s have that RBc’s don’t?
A nucleus.
What helps blood to clot and why?
Platelets help the blood to clot at a wound to stop blood pouring out and to stop microorganisms getting in.
What can a lack of platelets cause?
Excessive bleeding and bruising.
What does plasma do?
Carries platelets, WBC and RBC, Urea, Amino acids, glucose, proteins, hormones, antibodies and anti toxins and carbon dioxide.
