A

Many private companies in the education system are internationally owned. Edexcel (the exam board) is owned by US publisher Pearson and Ball argues marking for Edexcel can now take place in Iowa and Sydney.

What did Buckingham and Scanlon (2005) report on the financing of the UK Education sector?

A

Buckingham and Scanlon (2005): The UK’s four leading educational software companies are all owned by global multinationals (Disney, Mattel, Hambro (all US) and Vivendi (French). Many contracts for educational services in the UK are sold on by the original company to others such as banks and investment funds. Again these are often based overseas. All of this sees the transfer of UK taxpayer money (which funds schools) to overseas investors.

A

Conversely, the UK has many private companies that send educational work overseas such as Prospects (China, Macedonia and Finland). This can include importing UK style education policy such as Ofsted inspections.

Private schools and Universities in the UK increasingly compete in the global market for international students. Some argue this disadvantages local students. D’Overbroeck’s is an example of this – as a school we work with agencies across the world who we rely on to advertise and attract students from each country.

A

As a result, nation states are becoming less important in the increasingly private and globalised educational industry. This means that there is now more focus on the economic objectives of schools rather than social objectives such as integration and social cohesion. This, Kelly (2009) argued, also leads to the professionalism of teachers being undermined by managers, consultants, and international organisations.

As part of the EU, free migration of people affects British (mainly private) schools with lots of students who may not speak English as a first language, creating a diverse student population in many independent schools.

Schools respond to migration and globalisation by introducing programmes and schemes that celebrate diversity – e.g. international event days, Black History Month, assemblies raising cultural awareness, etc.
