If our Identity is Socially Constructed, what does this mean?
Our identity is constructed through our freedom of choice. Identity is a negotiated process. We are ACTIVE in the process of creating our identity.
If our Identity is Socially Caused, what does this mean?
Social conditions cause an identity, such as social inequalities or power relationships. Individuals are PASSIVE receivers of socialisation and our identity is the result of social structures.
How does Interactionism define how we create our identity?
We can create our identity through ‘impression management’. We can manipulate others impressions of us to prevent social stigma. The ‘self’ influences the way that we see our identity and how we construct our identity.
How does Postmodernism define how we create our identity?
Identity through consumption, leisure, cultural products and symbols. We can create and re-create our identities – it is a matter of choice. Identities are not stable, but instable, fluid and constantly changing.
How does Marxism define how we create our identity?
Identity governed by class inequalities
How does Feminism define how we create our identity?
Identity governed by gender relationships
How does Functionalism define how we create our identity?
Identity governed by cultural values that exist in the system
