Feminism on socialisation Flashcards

1
Q

Feminism believes that Socialisation mainly benefits men. Discuss.

A

Socialisation mainly benefits men. Socialisation is the process which reinforces gender inequalities. Examples of this can be found in education where it acts to reinforce patriarchal values through things like the hidden curriculum, gendered subject choices, gendered expectations, sexism, teachers labelling, language etc. The family also reinforces a patriarchal ideology through primary socialisation through toys, media, canalisation, manipulation (Oakley) which all reinforce the ideology that men are dominant and women are subordinate

Q

How do Feminists believe the media influences Socialisation?

A

The media: the media reinforces gender stereotypes by representing men and women in different ways. Women are objectified (turned into objects for the gratification of men), and symbolically annihilated (where they are trivialised, condemned and made invisible) (Tuchman).

Q

Do Feminists overemphasise the conflict of interest between men and women within Socialisation? How does this view compare with Functionalists?

A

Feminists overemphasise the conflict of interest between men and women. Functionalists argue that it is important that men and women take different roles in society for the smooth functioning of the family and economy, and socialisation teaches them these different roles.

Q

Feminism on Socialisation: Other theorists argue about divisions. Expand.

A

Other theorists argue that the divisions between men and women have blurred, and this is partly because of socialisation. E.g. the media often challenges stereotypes and shows men and women in different roles.
