Globalisation Flashcards
In a Postmodernism world discuss global connectivity.
In a PM world, we are connected globally and the process of globalisation has meant that ‘time and space’ have been compressed. In other words, we can skype someone across the globe within seconds, we can hear about events in the far reaches of the world instantly and what happens in one country may influence behaviour in another.
In a Postmodernism world discuss global culture with reference to corporations.
Rise of transnational corporations (McDonalds, Sony etc.) and the spread of cultural forms through cinema and music all emphasise consumption. Globalisation has resulted in symbols that are recognised around the world. The rise of this global culture is seen to be challenging nationalism as a source of identity whereby specific national identities are being undermined by the globalisation of other cultures. IT, internet, mobile technology has had a major role in this process.
With a view to Postmodernism, what would Marxist agree on about globalisation?
Marxists agree that globalisation is a significant feature of contemporary society, but this has only led to greater exploitation of poorer nations (exploitation of third world labour) and the growth of wealth of the ruling class who can now sell their products globally.
The rise of globalisation has deteriorated the significance of national identities which are being diluted and being replaced by a globalised culture which transgresses national borders, customs and traditions
