🚩 Tests and Measurements: Outcome Measures Flashcards
Tests and Measurements: Outcomes Measures
Examines degree of assistance required for bathing, dressing, toileting, transferring, continence and feeding in geriatric population
KATZ
Total points: 0-6
1 point: given if the activity is done without help. 0 point: required help or unable to do it.
Tests and Measurements: Outcomes Measures
Used to monitor functional changes and predict functional outcomes after CVA. Examine includes feeding, bathing, dressing, grooming, bowel, bladder, toilet, bladder, toilet use, transfer, mobility, and stairs
BARTHEL
The Higher the score the better the pt is (0-100)
Tests and Measurements: Outcomes Measures
Evaluates feeding, grooming, bathing, upper body dressing, lower body dressing and toileting, bowel and bladder control, Measures the level of assistance. 1- 7, 7 = total independence
FIM
Tests and Measurements: Outcomes Measures
Measures quality of life, self-reported 36 items
The SF-36
Tests and Measurements: Outcomes Measures
To collect data on adults in home care setting.
Allows home health agencies assess quality of care
OASIS
Tests and Measurements: Outcomes Measures
Examines mobility and impact of ADL on frail elderly, includes static [balance] and dynamic (gait) balance.
- Less than 19 = high risk for falls
- 9-24 = moderate risk of falls
- 25 and over = lower risk of falls
Performance Oriented Mobility Assessment
(POMA)
Tests and Measurements: Outcomes Measures
Measure functional balance in older adults in clinical setting and clients response to treatment.
- A score of 45 or below = indicate some risk of falls
- Score below 36 = 100% falls risk
- Maximum score is 56
Berg Balance Test
Tests and Measurements: Outcomes Measures
FIM 1
Dependent
Patient completes <25% of the physical work
Tests and Measurements: Outcomes Measures
FIM 2
MAXIMAL ASSISTANCE
Tests and Measurements: Outcomes Measures
FIM 3
MOD A
Patient completes 50-74% of the work
Tests and Measurements: Outcomes Measures
FIM 4
MINIMAL ASSISTANCE
Pt completes 75-99% of the work
Tests and Measurements: Outcomes Measures
FIM 5
SUPERVISION
Tests and Measurements: Outcomes Measures
FIM 6
Modified Independent
Requires assistive or adaptive device
Tests and Measurements: Outcomes Measures
FIM 7
Independent

Tests and Measurements: Outcomes Measures
Maintains steady balance without support. Accepts maximal challenge, shifts weight easily in all directions
Normal Balance
Tests and Measurements: Outcomes Measures
Maintains static balance without support, minimal sway. Accepts moderate challenge (i.e. picking up object from floor)
Good Balance
Tests and Measurements: Outcomes Measures
Able to maintain static balance with hand hold support / Min A. Accepts minimal challenge (i.e. turning trunk or head)
FAIR
Tests and Measurements: Outcomes Measures
Static: Requires Min/Mod to A maintain static posture, and is unable to accept challenges or move without loss of balance
POOR
Tests and Measurements: Outcomes Measures
A 68-year-old female 6 months post CVA presents to therapy with o referral for “Balance Disturbance.” During the initial evaluation, she is able to maintain standing with o straight cone and can turn her head in various directions. She is unable to reach down to tie her shoes
Static: fair
Dynamic: fair
Tests and Measurements: Outcomes Measures
Types of Cueing
VISUAL, TACTILE, VERBAL
Tests and Measurements: Outcomes Measures
The Mini-Mental State Examination can be used to
screen for cognitive dysfunction or dementia. The 11 question measure assesses five areas of cognitive function: orientation, registration, attention/calculation, recall, and language. The measure takes approximately 5-10 minutes to complete. Possible scores obtained on the Mini-Mental State Examination range from 0-30.
Tests and Measurements: Outcomes Measures
A score of less than 20 in the Mini-Mental State means that
may be associated with dementia, delirium, schizophrenia or an affective disorder.
Scored from 0-30:
A score of 24 is the minimum score to avoid being classified as having a cognitive impairment.
A score of 30 is a perfect score and would indicate that the patient is cognitively within normal limits.
Tests and Measurements: Outcomes Measures
A score of 28 in the Mini-Mental State means that:
no cognitive impairment

Tests and Measurements: Outcomes Measures
A score of 5 in the Mini-Mental State means that:
severe cognitive impairment

Tests and Measurements: Outcomes Measures
A physical therapist administers the Mini-Mental State Examination to a patient recently admitted to an acute care medical facility. The MINIMUM patient score necessary in order to avoid being classified as possessing a cognitive impairment would be:
26
or any score between 21 and 26
