Adult neuro: Guillain-Barre Syndrome Flashcards
Adult Neuro: GBS
what is Guillain-Barre syndrome?
rapid onset of bilateral muscle flaccid weakness and sensory impairments caused by the immune system damaging/demyelinating of peripheral nerves. Can be viral or Bacterial.
Adult Neuro: GBS
key objective examination in GBS
- History (pattern, sequence of symptoms)
- Motor function: AROM/PROM/MMT; cranial nerves; respiratory; balance; posture; functional assessment
- Sensory: dermatomes; type of sensory loss; pain
- Autonomic changes: vitals; B & B function
- Outcomes measures: GBS Disability Scale
Adult Neuro: GBS
GBS exercise precautions
excessive exercise during early reinnervation can lead to further damage rather than to the usual exercise-induced muscle hypertrophy
Avoid muscle fatigue/overuse
Adult Neuro: GBS
phases of GBS
- Acute <4 weeks (GBS should not progress after 4 weeks)
- Subacute 4-8 weeks
- Chronic > 8 weeks
Adult Neuro: GBS
GBS lab tests include CSF (protein levels and WBC count) and nerve conduction velocity. What results would you expect in these lab tests?
- CSF: elevated protein (because of myelin is broken down), and normal WBC
- Abnormal NCV: slower
Adult Neuro: GBS
reflex testing results in GBS
decreased or absent
