Term 3 Exam: Pelvic Girdle: Appendicular Skeleton Flashcards
The skeleton of the lower limb consists of two separate regions, what are they? How many bones in each?
- Pelvic girdle (2 bones)
- The free part (30 bones)
What four bones make up the adult pelvis?
- sacrum
- coccyx
- right ossa coxae
- left ossa coxae
What does the term “pelvic girdle” refer to?
The right and left ossa coxae
What are two key functions of the Pelvic girdle?
- Protects and supports the viscera in the inferior part of the ventral body cavity
- Support the weight of the body from vertebral column
Each pelvic bone consists of 3 bones fused together, what are those three bones?
- Ilium
- Ischium
- Pubis
Both pelvic bones are joined where?
- Anteriorly by the pubic symphysis (fibrocartilage)
and
- Posteriorly by the sacrum to form the sacroiliac joints
What is the ilium? (5)
Include:
- What it borders superiorly
- What are spines
- Consists of?
- Largest of the 3 hip bones
- superior part of the hip bone
- consists of a superior ala and inferior body which form part of the acetabulum (socket for femur)
- Superior border - iliac crest
- Spines serve as points of attachment of tendons and ligaments of the trunk, hip and thighs
What is the greater sciatic notch?
Allows passage of sciatic nerve
What are gluteal lines?
Border the attachment sites of gluteal muscles
What is the Iliac Fossa?
Depression where the ilacus muscle attaches
What is the Iliac Tuberosity?
Point of attachment for the sacroiliac ligament
What is the Auricular surface?
Articulates with the sacrum - forms sacroiliac joint
What is the Ischium?
- Inferior and Posterior part of the hip bone
- Most prominent feature is the ischial tuberosity - part that meets the chair when sitting
- Ramus and pubis form the obturator foramen - Largest foramen in the body
What is the Pubis?
- Inferior and anterior part of the hip bone
- Comprised of the superior and inferior rami and body
- has pectineal line
- has pubic symphysis
What is the Pectineal line?
of the pubis:
helps distiguish between the superior (false) and inferior (true) portions of the bony pelvis
