Term 1 Exam: Facial bones (from chapter 7 - axial skeleton) Flashcards
1
Q
What are the fourteen facial bones?
A
2x nasal 2x maxillae 2x zygomatic 1x mandible 2x lacrimal 2x palatine 2x inferior nasal conchae 1x vomer
2
Q
What are 5 characteristics of the nasal bones?
A
- Paired
- Contains rectangular bone that forms the bridge of the nose
- Supports the flexible cartilaginous plates (forms framework of the nose)
- Supports thin muscles of facial expression
- Common site for facial injuries
3
Q
What are 4 characteristics of the Lacrimal Bones?
A
- paired. Smallest bone of the face
- Form the anterior portion of the medial wall of the eye socket
- lacrimal groove passes tear duct into the nasal cavity
- Lacrimal fossa houses the lacrimal gland that produces tear and the lacrimal sac that stores it
4
Q
What are 2 characteristics of the Palatine?
A
- paired, L-shaped bones
2. Form the posterior edge of the hard palate, as well as portions of the eye socket and nasal cavity wall and floor
5
Q
What are 3 characteristics of the inferior nasal conchae?
A
- separate and not part of the cranial ethmoid bone *distinct from superior and middle nasal conchae
- All conchae help to swirl and filter air before it enters the lung
- Only the superior nasal conchae of the cranial ethmoid bone increase the surface area and aid in the sense of smell
6
Q
What are 2 characteristics of the vomer?
A
- An unpaired bone
- Sits on the floor of the nasal cavity
- extends a bony partition superiorly that meets the meets the perpendicular plate of the ethmoid
- together, the vomer and ethmoid make up the nasal septum
7
Q
What are four characteristics of the Maxillae?
A
- Paired maxillary bones fuse at the midline to form the upper jaw
- Internally, the maxillae contribute to the inferior wall of the orbit, the walls and the floor of the nasal cavity and most of the hard palate
- The body of the maxillae are internally hollow to form a pair of large sinuses (maxillary sinuses)
- Contains body, alveolar process and infraorbital foramen
8
Q
What are four characteristics of the zygomatic bones?
A
- Paired
- These bones form the prominences on the anterior face
- The temporal process projects posteriorly and articulates with the zygomatic process of the temporal bone to form the zygomatic arch
- zygomatic foramen passes zygomaticofical nerve and blood vessels
9
Q
What are two characteristics of the mandible?
A
- arched bone - largest and strongest bone - forms lower jaw
- The only movable bone of the facial bones
10
Q
What are 7 structural features of the mandible?
A
- body
- rami
- angle
- condylar process - mandibular fossa of temporal bone (tmj)
- coronoid process - temporalis muscle
- Mandibular notch
- mental foramen (chin)
