What does a “SPADE” C/S mean and what are they doing?
SPADE —> Is the C/S for the ACE (airspace control element) which operates on the Tactical air direction (TAD) frequency
- We contact SPADE prior to departure to req traffic, active RoZ and tracers
What does a “GOLF” C/S mean and what are they doing?
Typically a JFO, associated with an artillery team, likely to req AACFF
JFO
Joint Fires Observer
What does a “DAGGER” C/S mean and what are they doing?
Dagger —> Is a JTAC C/S
Explain the difference between “Tally”, “Captured”, “Contact” and “Visual”:
Tally = Sighting of a target, technically with the naked eye
Captured = Object has been acquired with onboard sensors (RMS)
Contact = Acknowledge sighting of a specified reference point (Used when talking on)
Visual = Is a term used exclusively for friendly positions
What does ANGELs mean?
ANGELS = Height of an aircraft in 1000s on feet AMSL
What does CHERUBS mean?
Height of a friendly aircraft in hundreds of feet AGL
Explain the difference between “Cleared HOT” and “Cleared to engage”:
Explain the difference between Remington and whichester:
Remington = No ordnance remaining except for gun or self protection ammo
Whinchester = Completely out of ammo
Explain the difference between “blind” and “no joy”:
Blind = No visual contact with a friendly C/S
No joy = No visual contact with an enemy POI
Explain the difference between “Negative Laser”, “Deadeye” and “Spot”:
Negative Laser = Laser energy has not been acquired
Deadeye = Laser designator failure or U/S
Spot = Laser energy has been acquired
LOAL/LOBL
Lock on After Launch / Lock on Before Launch
Explain each step of TPMR:
T - Target is ____ orientated ___, located to the ___ of the _____” we will engage via a ….
P - Low/Med, offset (L/R)/straight, hover/running/diving attack using…
M - Rocket into gun with a …
R - R/L pull caution _____
Explain each step of DTSW-RAM-T
D - “DVRs ON” …
T - “Target is a ____ orientated ____” …
S - “Sighting via RMS/PHMS” …
W - Attack utilising ____ set with ___
R - ____m” …
A - “Armed, Activated” …
M - “Nil messages”
T - “Firing” or “Rifle”
Explain what the following means:
- Misfire
- Hung fire
- Abnormal release
- Irregular release
- Negative release
- Inadvertent release
- Misfire = Is an umbrella term that covers a weapon firing error
- Hung fire = The weapon motor activated but did not seperate from the aircraft
- Abnormal release = Is an umbrella term that encompasses irregular, negative and inadvertent release profiles
- Irregular release = When a weapon is fired and an aircraft system has failed impacting the correct release/firing
- Negative release = When a weapon is fired and nothing happens (e.g. rocket misfire)
- Inadvertent release = When the weapon fires without the crew commanding it
AMV (Rockets)
Anti-material vehicle
DPI
Desired Point of Impact
Explain the difference between a “Laser TGT hand over” and a “remote lase”:
Laser TGT handover
- Is when someone on the ground sees a TGT and using their LST they show you where it is, often by providing a grid square and a laser code
- A LTH does not imply that the ground C/S will lase for the missile, they are simply showing you where a TGT is
Remote lase
- Is when someone else is doing the lase seperate from the aircraft
