Irritation of meninges of the brain due to a bacterial or aseptic infection; potentially fatal
Meningitis
Signs and symptoms of meningitis?
- Nuchal rigidity
- Fever
- Lethargy, irritability
- Abrupt onset
- Poor feeing
- Seizures
- Shrill cry
- Bulging fontanels
- Vomiting
For meningitis, what signs do we test for?
Kernig and Brudzinski signs
How do we test Kernig sign?
Raise childs leg with knee flexed, then extend the childs leg at the knee…if any resistance is noted or pain is felt that means positive Kernig sign
How do we test the Brudzinski sign?
Flex childs head while in supine position. If this actions makes the knees or hips flex involuntarily, then it is a positive Brudzinski sign
What vaccine decreases incidence of meningitis?
H. flu (Hib)
What may be the initial sign of meningitis?
Seizure
What is nuchal rigidity?
Pain with neck flexion
How do we treat cerebral edema with meningitis?
Osmotic diuretic, mannitol
What is the biggest sequalae of tuberculous meningitis?
Hydrocephalus
Hearing loss is a possible problem associated with meningitis. What drug do we especially need to be on the lookout for hearing loss if we administer it?
Aminoglycoside antibiotic
Meningitis treatment: How should HOB be? What about lights in room? Visitors allowed?
