Sexually TransmittedInfections
A
- Infectious diseases most commonly transmitted through sexual contact
- Can be bacterial or viral
- also transmitted by Blood, Blood products, Perinatal transmission, Autoinoculation

Gonorrhea
A
- Caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae
- Direct physical contact with infected host
- Present in genitalia, rectum, and oropharynx
- 2nd most common STI
- Easily killed by drying, heating, or washing with antiseptic
- Elicits inflammatory process that can lead to fibrous tissue and adhesions

* Usually from anal intercourse

Syphilis
A
- a bacterial infection usually spread by sexual contact.
- The disease starts as a painless sore — typically on the genitals, rectum or mouth.
- Syphilis spreads from person to person via skin or mucous membrane contact with these sores
- Association with HIV

Chlamydial
A
- Most prevalent bacterial STI in Canada
- Caused by Chlamydia trachomatis (bacteria)
- infected persons are asymptomatic “Silent disease”
- Transmitted during vaginal, anal, or oral sex

Genital Herpes
A
- Caused by herpes simplex virus (HSV)
- Enters through mucous membranes or breaks in the skin during contact with infected persons
- HSV reproduces inside cell and spreads to surrounding cells.
- Persists for life

HSV-1
A
- Causes infection above the waist
* Either strain can cause disease on mouth or genitals.

A
- Frequently infects genital tract and perineum
* Either strain can cause disease on mouth or genitals.

Human Papillomavirus Infection
A
- Caused by human papillomavirus (HPV)
- Genital Warts
- Highly contagious
- Minor trauma causes abrasions for HPV to enter and proliferate into warts.
- White to grey and pink-fleshed coloured
- May form large cauliflower-like masses
